INTENTIONS & THOUGHTS BEHIND THE STYLE OF WOMEN IN WAR

I wanted to continue to play with the stylised perspective, the space and the use of line. At the same time I also wanted to experiment and develop the style to make it more complex while adding elements of a softer shape language.

I planned on making compositions, scale and the use of camera grander to visually enhance a sense of magnitude.

As the world in Women In War is a “zoom out” compared to Nachthexen, I wanted to take the opportunity to show the vastness of WW2 and also making the characters feel small in a very large conflict. This to create contrast and fully show the bravery of the women fighting to make a difference.

I wanted to explore the idea of giving each country a distinct visual identity within the overall visual look.

First of all so the viewer would know what country we’re in solely from the use of colour and the way the backgrounds would be painted. Secondly, it was important to me to touch on the theme of human value and dehumanisation.

I wanted the style of the characters to stay the same no matter where they were located while the style of the backgrounds would change depending on the country.

This to illustrate that people are worth the same no matter where they come from. Only when the characters were put in koncentration camps would their design gradually change as they had their inherent human worth brutally and consistently taken away from them.

The project receive funding from Creative Europe in 2020 but is currently paused.
